RCAM is developing Marine Pumped Hydroelectric (MPH) Storage pods that can integrate with California’s floating offshore wind farms to create offshore renewable hybrid energy systems. Their innovation is a long duration energy storage (LDES) technology that stores/releases electrical energy in 3D concrete printed spheres arranged in a rigid pod of several spheres connected to a pump/turbine/generator module installed on the seafloor.Based on pumped hydro principles, MPH will charge by pumping seawater out of the spheres during periods of excess renewable energy production. In times of high demand, MPH will discharge electrical energy to the grid by channeling the surrounding high-pressure water through the turbine, re-filling the spheres.
